Kids Join the Festivities

Bohemia Mining Days should be enjoyed by the entire family.  Kids are encouraged to join in the fun by dressing up and taking part in the activities.  Many of the booths and activities are geared directly for the young at heart.

July 10, 11 The Cottage Grove Rodeo kicks off the week-long festivities and has lots of kid-oriented events on Friday and Saturday night, such as junior bull riding, calf riding, mutton bustin’ , steer riding,  and junior barrel racing. Two favorite kid events: Greased Pig Contest on Friday evening and and Animal Scramble on Saturday evening.

July 10, 11, 12 The Carnival comes to town and sets up just north of Main Street (behind the post office) with rides for kids of all ages. Advanced all-day tickets are on sale for $15 at the Cottage Grove Bi-Mart prior to July 8. Advanced tickets are redeemed for a ride bracelet at the Carnival’s ticket booth.  During the Carnival the bracelets are $18. Hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

July 10, 11, 12 & 15, 16, 17 Visit the Cottage Grove Museum from 1-4 p.m. and see all the treasures preserved from the past including a coat worn by a Grover who survived the RMS Titanic’s ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912.

July 11, 12, 13 in Coiner Park: Train rides all day ($2/per ride). FaerieTea Party ($3 suggested donation) on the hour from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Vendor booths open at 4 p.m.

July 11 With the rodeo in town there will be Mechanical Bull Riding in Coiner Park all day beginning at 10 a.m. Come see Jon & David Berg of Cottage Grove, who are award winning bull riders, demonstrate what it takes to stay on top!

July 11 Bring a blanket and some popcorn [PJs optional] to enjoy a Saturday night movie under the stars for the whole family.   Outdoor movie featuring “Kung Fu Panda begins at 9:30 p.m. at Bohemia Park [10th & Main].

July 13 Plan to attend a Happy Birthday Oregon Party from 6-8 p.m. hosted by the Cottage Grove United Methodist Church, located at 334 Washington Avenue.  See a slide show of Oregon history as you enjoy strawberry shortcake ($4) and ice cream cones ($1). Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the church’s outreach ministry serving homeless and low income individuals in our community.

July 13, 14, 15 Kids can express their creativity with their Sidewalk Chalk Art in Coiner Park from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Decorate the park sidewalks with artwork, doodles, scratches and drawings. Chalk provided.

July 14 Don’t miss Reptile Man and his dazzling display of our reptile friends in the Coiner Park Gazebo from 6-7 p.m.

July 13 The Kid Zone opens in the Coiner Park Playground at 4 p.m. Train rides.

July 14 at the Coiner Park Gazebo Stage: Spelling Bee Preliminary sponsored by the Cottage Grove Library and Friends of the Library 4-6 p.m. Spelling Bee Finals 7 p.m. Winner & prizes presented after completion.

July 16 The Bohemia City Marshal (aka Mayor Gary Williams) and his deputies will close Main Street in the Historic District between 5th and 8th Streets for Downtown Golden Daze. The Marshal and his posse will give out wooden nickels that kids can redeem in the BMD Saloon (next to Big Stuff BBQ) for a free Sarsaparilla.

July 16, 17, 18, 19 Looking for a great way to let kids burn off their excess energy? Check out Climb for Fun at Bohemia Park  from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It features six large inflatables and a climbing rock wall. Prices range from $2 - $5.

July 16, 17, 18 19 Kids will love the train ride around Coiner Park’s Bohemia City as they experience the spirit of railroading that opened up the American West to development in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. ($2 per ride.) Train service begins at 10:30 a.m. and runs all day.

July 17 Enter the kids in the Kiddie Parade sponsored by the Prospectors & Golddiggers. Lineup 10:30 a.am. at the Cottage Grove Community Center parking lot. The parade begins 11 a.m. All entrants receive a ribbon & ice cream.

July 17 Tickle the taste buds at the annual Ice Cream Social hosted at the Cottage Grove First Presbyterian Church on Third and Adams from 4-8 p.m.

July 17, 18 Experience good old fashioned fun by entering the Cherry Spittin’ Contest next to the Coiner Park Gazebo Stage at 12:30 p.m. & 3 p.m.

July 17, 18 Kids will love watching Buck, Elizabeth and Peter perform on the Coiner Park Gazebo Stage.  Performances are 5:15-6 p.m.

July 17, 18, 19 Travel back in time with your kids to see what life was like when Oregon was a brand new state. Visit the Civil War-era Living History Demonstration at Bohemia Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

July 17, 18, 19 Cottage Theatre presents the world premiere of local playwright K.K. Mills’ Family Friendly Melodrama: “It’s Oregon’s Birthday, So On With the Show… OR The Dynamite’s Lit and It’s Ready to Blow.” All tickets are $5. Showtimes are Friday & Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

July 18 Dress up the whole family in Victorian or western costumes and enter the Costume Contest. Categories are Man, Woman and Child with prizes for each winner. Coiner Park Gazebo at 1 p.m.

July 18 Coiner Park Gazebo Stage: Youth Talent Show. Come and share your talent with us. Ages 8-18. Noncompetitive. Prizes for all entrants.

July 18, 19 Here’s your chance to treat the entire family to a real gold mining experience.  The Christa Countessa Mine at the 10 mile marker on Sharps Creek Road [east of Cottage Grove] invites you to come and Pan for Real Gold! Miners will be there from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist and to answer questions. If you find gold it’s yours to keep. There is no charge and donations are accepted.

July 19 A Bohemia Mining Days tradition since 1965, Breakfast on the Mountain, is sponsored by the Prospectors and Golddiggers Booster Club.  Located in Bohemia Saddle Park, 35 miles east of Cottage Grove, in the Umpqua National Forest. The menu is ham, eggs, all-you-can-eat pancakes, juice and coffee. Adults $6 & Kids $4. Club members dressed in costume serve from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Hi Diana,

    The process is the same as last year. Arrive at the CG Community Center/Library at 10:30 a.m. and check in at the table set up in the parking lot. The theme this year is “O Them Golden Days.” The parade begins at 11 a.m. and all entries will receive a ribbon and ice cream at the conclusion of the parade.
